Duplex stainless steel is a very useful metal that is used around the world. It gets its name from the fact that it is composed of two different grades of metal.
Essentially, duplex steel is an Fe-Ni-Cr alloy with a two-phase ferritic-austenitic stainless steel microstructure at room temperature.
Duplex steels are characterized by high chromium content (19-28%) and molybdenum content (up to 5%), while nickel content is lower than austenitic stainless steels. The most commonly used duplex stainless steels are 2205 (22% chromium, 5% nickel) and 2507 (25% chromium, 7% nickel); 2507 is called "super duplex steel" because of its higher corrosion resistance.
The advantage of combining ferritic and austenitic grades is that the resulting metal has a metallurgical structure consisting of two phases and therefore benefits from the properties of both microstructures.
These properties make duplex steels highly sought after in heavy industries such as oil and gas nuclear and chemical processing.
