The concepts of super austenitic stainless steel include super ferritic stainless steel and super duplex stainless steel. Typical examples are super austenitic stainless steels containing 6% and 7% molybdenum. These steel grades were developed for harsh industries such as petrochemicals, chemicals, paper and offshore systems.
Super austenitic stainless steels are considered stainless steels with a Pitting Resistance Equivalency Number (PREN) greater than 40. This is often attributed to alloys with large amounts of molybdenum added (usually 6% or more).
Austenitic stainless steel is the most commonly used stainless steel series in general engineering applications. The 3xx series is relatively simple to fabricate and weld, has excellent toughness over a wide temperature range, and has reasonable corrosion resistance. By increasing the chromium and molybdenum content, the resistance to pitting corrosion can be significantly improved. However, in order to retain the good mechanical and physical properties of austenitic stainless steel, the nickel content must also be increased. This would also increase their price, making alternative grades more attractive.
Alloy 254 (6Mo, UNS S31254, F44, 1.4547, 254SMO) is the most common so-called super austenitic stainless steel. The high molybdenum content gives it a PREN of 43, compared to a PREN of only 25 for Alloy 316L. Alloy 654 (UNS S32654, 654SMO, 1.4652) contains nearly 8% molybdenum, giving it a PREN of 54. Some consider Alloy 904L (UNS N08904, 1.4539) to also be a super-austenitic stainless steel, although it is somewhere between a nickel-based alloy and a stainless steel, containing 25% nickel and 20% chromium. Because of the increased alloy content of these grades, many of their historical applications have been superseded by duplex and superduplex stainless steels.
