Is Galvanized Steel Stronger Than Carbon Steel?

Sep 22, 2023

Carbon steel is an alloy composed of iron, carbon, and other elements such as manganese or silicon. Its high strength-to-weight ratio makes it widely used in mechanical parts or building structures. Although carbon steel has some corrosion resistance, it is prone to rust in humid environments. Therefore, if you plan to use carbon steel outdoors or in places prone to contact with water, it is recommended to apply a protective coating on its surface.

Galvanized steel sheets are made by coating a zinc layer on a carbon steel substrate. This zinc coating protects against corrosion caused by factors such as rain, snow or extreme temperatures. The thickness of the zinc coating depends on the specific application, but generally ranges from 0.5 mil (equivalent to one thousandth of an inch) to 20 mil (equivalent to 0.02 inch). Galvanized steel can be used both indoors and outdoors because its zinc coating effectively prevents rust.

In general, the main differences between carbon steel and galvanized steel are their composition and the presence or absence of a protective layer against corrosion. Galvanized steel contains a layer of zinc and therefore has advantages over carbon steel in terms of anti-corrosion properties. From a cost perspective, galvanized steel may be slightly more expensive, but its durability and anti-corrosion properties will save you money in the long run.

Industrially, carbon steel is used in bridges, construction, and automobiles, while galvanized steel is commonly used in pipes and electrical equipment.
