The main use of cold-rolled oriented silicon steel strip is for transformer manufacturing, so it is also called cold-rolled transformer silicon steel. Compared with cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel, oriented silicon steel has stronger magnetic directivity. It has excellent high permeability and low loss characteristics of easy magnetizing rolling direction. The iron loss in the rolling direction of the oriented steel strip is only 1/3 of the transverse, the permeability ratio is 6:1, the iron loss is about 1/2 of the hot rolled steel, and the magnetic permeability is 2.5 times of the latter.

Future Scope of CRGO Silicon Steel:
While there have been alternatives to the CRGO grades of steel such as nickel-iron, mu-metal, amorphous boron strip, superglass etc still CRGO steel is the superior choice in the transformer industry. Alloys like the amorphous metal Fe78-B13-Si9 has shown to have much lesser core losses when used as the core of distribution transformer as compared to the CRGO grade steel. An optimum constituent of silicon addition in steel can change the texture so as to achieve desirable magnetic properties when manufactured under controlled conditions.
