SPCC Steel: Quality Standards

Nov 30, 2023

SPCC indicates that cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips are generally used, and their chemical composition and mechanical properties are equivalent to Chinese brands Q195 and Q215A.

SPCC

SPCC was originally the name of "cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips for general use" in the Japanese Standard (JIS). Now many countries or companies directly use it to represent similar steel products they produce (for example, Baosteel Q/BQB402 standard has SPCC).

Note: Similar grades include SPCD (cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips for stamping), SPCE (cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips for deep drawing), SPCCK\SPCCCE, etc. (special steel for televisions), SPCC4D\SPCC8D etc. (hard steel, used for bicycle rims, etc.), respectively used in different occasions.

SPCC steel

SPCC - stands for generally used cold-rolled carbon steel sheets and strips. Its chemical composition and mechanical properties are equivalent to Chinese brands Q195 and Q215A. The third letter C is the abbreviation of Cold. When it is necessary to ensure the tensile test, add T at the end of the grade to indicate SPCCT.

1.What is SPCC-SD/SB?
SPCC stands for Commercial Cold Rolled Steel and reflects a commitment to excellence. "SD" indicates standard condition grade, while "SB" indicates both dark and glossy surfaces, providing versatility for a variety of applications.

2. Equivalent grades of JIS G3141 and SPCC steel
Understanding equivalence is critical. The SPCC found counterparts in various international standards: ASTM, BS1449 and DIN 1623. Notable equivalent standards include A366 (CR4) in ASTM, ST12 in BS1449, and SPCC in DIN 1623.

3. Chemical composition of SPCC
Chemical composition is the cornerstone of SPCC quality. With a maximum carbon content of 0.15%, manganese 0.60%, phosphorus 0.10% and sulfur 0.05%, SPCC sets standards to ensure robustness and durability.

4. Chemical composition of JIS G3141 steel and SPCC
Comparing the chemical composition of SPCC to the broader JIS G3141 steel grades reveals the strength of SPCC. SPCC maintains a good balance of 0.15% carbon, 0.60% manganese, 0.10% phosphorus and 0.05% sulfur.

5. Mechanical properties of SPCC steel
Features of SPCC
In addition to composition, understanding mechanical properties is also critical. SPCC steel has excellent mechanical strength, ensuring it meets the stringent requirements of commercial applications.

6. Mechanical properties of JIS G3141 steel and SPCC
A detailed comparison of the mechanical properties between SPCC and JIS G3141 steel grades further solidifies SPCC as a premium choice for discerning applications.
