How long can galvanized steel last without rusting?
Just as the acidity of the atmosphere affects the rate of corrosion, so does the acidity of the soil. The galvanized coating on hot-dipped galvanized steel can last 35 to 50 years in the harshest soils and 75 years or more in less corrosive soils.
How long does HDG last?
Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) is commonly used to protect steel from corrosion in some of the harshest environments imaginable, but it can provide decades of maintenance-free life. The corrosion resistance of hot-dip galvanizing varies with the environment, but the typical corrosion rate in the same environment is 1/30th of that of bare steel. Measurements of the actual rate of consumption of the coating during the first few years of use provide good data for predicting the remaining life of the first maintenance, as the zinc corrosion products adhere and are quite visible in most environments as the zinc corrosion products form on the surface. Being insoluble, the rate of corrosion usually slows down over time.
The corrosion resistance of zinc coatings depends primarily on the thickness of the coating, but varies with the severity of the environmental conditions. Each environment affects hot dip galvanizing differently based on a unique set of corrosion variables. Predictability of coating life is important in planning and budgeting for required maintenance.
