How Do You Know How Thick The Coating Of Color-coated Plate Is?

Dec 22, 2023

Accurate measurement of zinc layer thickness of color-coated sheets
Use salt and a wiping cloth to remove the coating on the surface of the color steel plate (the technique must be careful to avoid damaging the coating), and then use a magnetic coating thickness gauge to accurately measure the thickness of the coating. Measure three points on the same surface and take the average.

Calculation of zinc layer thickness of color-coated sheets
The thickness of the coating can also be roughly calculated based on the weight of the two-sided coating per square meter provided on the material sheet or label. The actual calculation method is as follows:

(1) Coating thickness of pure galvanized steel plate = net weight of coating on both sides ÷ 2 ÷ 7.3. For example, if the net weight of coating is 180 grams/square meter, then coating thickness = 180 ÷ 2 ÷ 7.3 = 12.32 μm;

(2) The coating thickness of a galvanized steel plate containing 15% aluminum = the net weight of the coating on both sides ÷ 2 ÷ 6.8. For example, if the net weight of the coating is 150 grams/square meter, the coating thickness = 150 ÷ 2 ÷ 6.8 = 11.03 μm;

(3) The thickness of the hot-dip galvanized coating containing 55% aluminum = the net weight of the coating on both sides ÷ 2 ÷ 5.2. For example, if the net weight of the coating is 150 grams/square meter, the coating thickness = 150 ÷ 2 ÷ 5.2 = 14.42 μm.

Zinc layer weight calculation
The net weight of the coating can be calculated based on the coating thickness measured by the magnetic coating thickness gauge. The actual calculation method is as follows:

(1) Net weight of galvanized steel plate coating = coating thickness × 7.3 × 2. For example, if the detected thickness is 12.32, then the net weight of the coating is 12.32 × 7.3 × 2 = 180 g/m2;

(2) The net weight of the galvanized steel plate coating containing 15% aluminum = coating thickness × 6.8 × 2. For example, the detected thickness is 11.03, then the net weight of the coating is 11.03 × 6.8 × 2 = 150 g/m2;

(3) The net weight of the hot-dip galvanized coating containing 55% aluminum = coating thickness × 5.2 × 2. For example, if the detected thickness is 14.42, the net weight of the coating will be 14.42 × 5.2 × 2 = 150 g/m2.

Accurate measurement of coating thickness
After checking the thickness of the coating, use the same method to check the total thickness of the coating and plating. Accurately measure three points on the same surface and take the average.

The thickness of the coating can be calculated by subtracting the coating thickness from the total thickness. For example, the coating and the total thickness of the coating measured by the magnetic coating thickness gauge are 36 μm, and the coating thickness is 11 μm, then the coating thickness is 36- 11=25μm
