The difference between galvanized steel and cold rolled steel

Dec 04, 2023

What is cold rolled steel?
Cold rolled steel is steel produced by cold rolling. Cold rolling is to further thin the No. 1 steel plate to a target thickness under room temperature conditions. Compared with hot-rolled steel plates, cold-rolled steel plates have a more precise thickness, smooth and beautiful surface, and have various superior mechanical properties, especially in terms of processing performance. Because cold-rolled raw coils are relatively brittle and hard and not suitable for processing, cold-rolled steel plates are usually required to be annealed, pickled and surface smooth before being handed over to customers. The maximum thickness of cold rolling is below 0.1--8.0MM. For example, the thickness of cold-rolled steel plates in most factories is below 4.5MM; the minimum thickness and width are determined according to the equipment capabilities and market demand of each factory.

Galvanized and cold rolled steel coils

Galvanized and cold rolled steel coils
All steel plate and tube products contain the two basic elements carbon and iron and may have some compositional differences and different manufacturing processes. Galvanized steel coils and cold rolled steel coils are the same type of steel with unique properties and uses.

Production and advantages of galvanized steel
Galvanized steel is often called hot-dip galvanized steel. As the name suggests, galvanized steel is made by dipping steel products in molten zinc, and then the zinc layer is rapidly oxidized in the open air. Compared with iron, zinc is less active in the redox process, which is why zinc layers are popular in our lives to protect steel products.

Cold rolled CR steel

Cold rolled steel definition
Cold rolling and hot rolling processes are two forming methods for steel. Cold-rolled products have higher dimensional accuracy and are suitable for more applications with high dimensional requirements. Cold rolling is performed below the crystallization temperature and is controlled by different types of rolls. The basic products are cold-rolled plates and coils, and other shapes such as cylinders, I-beams, and pipes can also be formed.

The difference between galvanized steel coil and cold rolled steel coil
Can cold rolled steel products be galvanized? The answer is yes, they are two processing methods with different purposes, one is shaping and the other is anti-corrosion. The only limitation of galvanized steel is that it cannot be used in high temperature conditions, and if the surface is scratched, the zinc layer will lose its protection at the scratched location.

Strength comparison of hot rolled steel and cold rolled steel
Galvanized steel products can be produced with both cold-rolled steel and hot-rolled steel. Generally, hot-rolled steel has better yield strength than cold-rolled steel because the cold-rolling process destroys the grain structure of the steel, while hot-rolling improves the grain structure. structure. Cold rolled steel has a better surface condition than hot rolled steel. Customers should choose appropriate steel materials according to different uses.
