Temperature range for galvanized layer application

Mar 11, 2024

(1) Temperature range for galvanized layer application

Generally speaking, the temperature range of its application is very wide. However, it should be noted that the adaptability of the application environment corresponding to the structural characteristics of the galvanized layer in low-temperature environments is determined by the adaptability of the steel, not the galvanized layer. For example, damage to the galvanized layer at low temperatures is most likely caused by cold shrinkage of the steel rather than a quality problem with the galvanized layer.

In atmospheric environments, the application of galvanized layers is almost unrestricted.

(2) The upper temperature limit for zinc coating application ("Kirkendall effect")

It is generally limited to ≤220℃. The reason is that if the ambient temperature is higher, diffusion between Zn-Fe will occur.

If the ambient temperature remains high for a long time, the Zn-Fe in the galvanized layer will cause the galvanized layer to fall off due to different expansion speeds, and even cause the steel matrix to become embrittled and damaged. This phenomenon is also known as the "Kirkendall effect" ", an extreme case is the heat exchanger after hot-dip galvanizing.

This needs to be taken seriously in quality disputes with customers.
