- What is Cold Rolled Steel Coil DS Type A/B/C ASTM?
DS = Drawing Steel
Indicates that the steel is designed for the drawing, stamping, forming process and has better ductility and formability than the basic grade (CS - Commercial Steel).
Type A, B, C = Sub-type
Distinguishes the range of mechanical properties and chemical composition requirements (especially carbon, manganese, phosphorus content) of different grades.
| Characteristic | DS Type A | DS Type B | DS Type C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Basic punching performance | Standard punching performance | Higher punching performance |
| Strength and hardness | Relatively high | Medium | Relatively low |
| Scalability | Basic level | Common level | Better |
| Chemical composition restrictions | Relatively loose | Moderate | Stricter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phosphorus content (P) | ≤0.025% | ≤0.025% | ≤0.02% |
| Applicable scenarios | Simple stamping/bending | Most stamping parts | Complex shapes/deep drawing |
Detailed description

DS Type B Cold Rolled Steel Coil
The most commonly used stamping grade steel, equivalent to China's national standard SPCD, European standard DC03/DC04, and Japanese standard SPCD.
Balanced mechanical properties: tensile strength of about 270~380 MPa, high elongation (≥34%).
Suitable for most stamping parts (such as electrical housings, brackets, simple containers).
DS Type C Cold Rolled Coil
The stamping performance is better than Type B, close to deep drawing grade (DDS).
The lower phosphorus content (P≤0.02%) reduces cold brittleness and improves ductility.
For parts that require deeper drawing or complex shapes (such as fuel tanks, lampshades).
DS Type A Cold Rolled Coil
The stamping performance is slightly lower than Type B, with slightly higher strength and lower cost.
Suitable for simple stamping or bending parts (such as structural parts, tool boxes) that do not require high formability.

Relationship with other grades of American Standard
- Basic grade: CS Type A/B/C (Commercial Steel) → For general use (such as SPCC/DC01).
- Deep drawing grade: DDS Type A/B/C (Deep Drawing Steel) → Better performance than DS type, used for complex deep drawing parts (such as SPCE/DC05).
- Extra deep drawing grade: EDDS (Extra Deep Drawing Steel) → Highest formability (such as DC06/SPCF).
Selection Recommendation
Prefer DS Type B: covers most stamping needs and is cost-effective.
Need deep drawing or complex forming → choose DS Type C or upgrade to DDS series.
Simple processing/cost-sensitive → DS Type A or CS series.
