SS400 is a common designation for a structural steel grade in Japan. It stands for "SS" which stands for "Structural Steel" and "400" which represents the minimum tensile strength of 400 megapascals (MPa). SS400 is primarily a carbon steel grade, not a stainless steel grade.

In general, SS400 material offers superior corrosion resistance and weldability compared to mild steel but may not be as strong in certain applications. On the other hand, mild steel provides better strength than SS400 but may not have the same level of corrosion protection or weldability.
