A galvanized 150 × 150 square pipe is a square hollow section: 150 mm outside by 150 mm outside, hollow, with a zinc coating. The three numbers that define your order are side × wall thickness × length, and the coating method. Wall thickness drives both the weight and the load capacity, so it is the number to fix first.
150 × 150 sits in the heavy structural band of the SHS range. It is used as columns, main beams and primary frame members – not for light furniture. Typical wall thicknesses for this size are 4.0 to 12.0 mm; 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 mm are the sizes we normally hold in stock.

Hot Dip Galvanized Square Tube

Its corrosion resistance is much higher than that of cold galvanizing. FAQ
1. Is the coating on the inside of the tube too?
On hot-dip galvanized tube, yes – the whole tube is immersed, so both the outside and the inside surface are coated. On pre-galvanized tube the inside carries the strip coating, but the weld seam area on the inside is unprotected.
2. What is the difference between pre-galvanized and hot-dip galvanized pipe?
Pre-galvanized tube is made from strip that was coated before forming, so the weld seam is left bare. Hot-dip tube is dipped after forming, so the seam and the inside are coated as well, and the coating is three to five times thicker. For anything permanent and outdoors, hot-dip is the right choice.
3. Can I weld galvanized square tube?
Yes, but grind the zinc off the joint area first and ventilate properly – zinc fume is hazardous. After welding, restore the coating with a zinc-rich cold galvanizing spray. For structural work, we recommend pre-fabricating and hot-dip galvanizing the finished assembly.
4. What wall thickness do I need for a 150 × 150 column?
It depends on the load and the buckling length, so we cannot give a safe figure without your load case. Send the axial load, the effective length and the end conditions and we will have our engineer check it and come back with a recommended wall.
5. What lengths do you stock, and can you cut to size?
Standard mill lengths are 6.0 m and 12.0 m. We cut to any length, drill, punch and mitre-cut in-house, so you can receive members ready to bolt up.
6. Will the zinc coating crack if I bend the tube?
The zinc-iron alloy layers are metallurgically bonded but they are not as ductile as the steel. Tight cold bends can crack the coating. For bent members, form first and galvanize afterwards.
