Production of galvanized steel coils:
There are two commonly used methods of applying zinc to steel coils.
1. The hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) technique creates a protective layer by immersing the steel strip in a bath of molten zinc. Hot-dip galvanized steel coils can be produced by continuous galvanizing lines using either non-oxidizing annealing furnaces (Sendzimir method and its variants) or using wet or dry agents (Cook-Norteman method and its modifications). Hot- or cold-rolled non-annealed (fully hardened) steel coils are used as feedstock for continuous hot-dip galvanizing lines in non-oxidizing annealing furnaces. The production process consists of electrochemical cleaning, drying and annealing of the strip to obtain the desired mechanical properties, followed by immersion of the material in a bath of molten zinc and controlled zinc thickness.
2. Electrolytic galvanizing is an electrochemical process in which a layer of zinc is applied in an acid or alkaline electrolyte bath. The main idea of the technique is to utilize oxidation and reduction reactions in which electrons move through an electron transfer chain while zinc ions in the electrolyte flow from the anode to the cathode. This type of coating is usually used for thin materials; the thickness of the coating is typically 5-12 μm, which accurately fits the shape of the product. The absence of an intermediate brittle layer makes electrolytic galvanized coatings more malleable than hot-dip galvanized coatings. The main areas of application for this type of product include automotive, transportation and mechanical engineering.
